Shear Delight

Join the flock and watch as our wooly friends are sheared. Library Executive Director Gretchen raises Shetland sheep for their much-desired fleece and currently has a flock of 15, located in Sharon Valley. Watch us wrangle the sheep and see the shearer do his magic, as he skillfully and gently shears the sheep.
Learn how to “skirt”, or clean, a fleece and evaluate the wool. You will learn about the myriad colors and markings of Shetland sheep, an unimproved heritage breed renowned for their wool and hardiness. After the hard work, we will retire to the porch for some tasty treats and drinks.
Hazel, Helga, Betty, Bertha, Harvey and their friends look forward to meeting you. Their fleeces have won prizes at the Annual New York State Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck and are much admired by hand-spinners.
We can accommodate up to 8 participants for 2 hours.
Please note: We shear twice yearly: April and September. Donald the Shearer normally schedules at fairly short notice. We will do our best to find a time that works for everyone. We appreciate your flexibility in finding a time that works for the shearer and you. If you can’t join in the fall, we can include you in the spring.
