A stretched knitted stitch takes on the hexagonal structure of a cell and grows like a beehive. There is a logic in the way that simple looped stitches repeat, interlocking to form a membrane. Under my brush these stitches accrete and grow into abstract fields. There is plenty of room to explore the physics of a string pulled taught, compressed, or allowed to relax and how that effects the overall structure. My mathematician friends insist that my understanding of topology is intuitive; I must take their word for it. Each Fabrication painting was monochrome: one blue, one green, one red. This yellow-hued painting may suggest fields of wheat. Or perhaps an artist’s Midas touch.
