Gail Rothschild Signed Digital Print

Spatial Properties Preserved Under Bicontinuous Deformation by Gail Rothschild
2007 Watercolor on Paper, 26 x 40 inches
Signed digital print from the watercolor

A stretched knitted stitch takes on the hexagonal structure of a cell and grows like a beehive. There is a logic in the way that simple looped stitches repeat, interlocking to form a membrane. Under my brush these stitches accrete and grow into abstract fields. There is plenty of room to explore the physics of a string pulled taught, compressed, or allowed to relax and how that effects the overall structure.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Gail Rothschild is intimately familiar with the effects of time and decay on art. After graduating from Yale with a BA (cum laude), she embarked on a peripatetic career creating site-specific sculptural installations for colleges and museums
